Casentino Forests: In the Wolf’s Territory Between Camaldoli and La Verna

A weekend of hiking in the heart of the Casentinesi Forests National Park, designed to offer an informed introduction to the world of the wolf, one of the Apennines’ iconic animals.

In the heart of the Casentino Forest National Park, a hike designed to offer an informed introduction to world of the wolf, one of the symbolic animals of theApennines. Several packs live permanently in this area, within one of Italy’s most pristine forest ecosystems. This is not a wildlife-watching trip, but an immersive experience in its natural habitats: we walk through centuries-old beech forests and silent ridges, on the edge of remote places such as the Sasso Fratino Integral Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The wolf, a shy animal rarely seen, is part of this balance. Along the way, we learn to read the landscape, recognize tracks, and understand its role in nature. The route also takes us through places steeped in history and spirituality, such as the Monastery of Camaldoli and the Sanctuary of La Verna. We walk in small groups, accompanied by an expert guide, with luggage transport and meticulous organization. An experience for those who want to experience the mountains more deeply, connecting with the forest and its inhabitants, both visible and invisible.

WHERE ARE WE GOING?

Program

First day

The Sasso Fratino and Camaldoli Ridge
Meeting point in Stia at 10:00 a.m. and transfer to Passo della Calla. From here, we begin walking along the ridge that runs alongside the Sasso Fratino Nature Reserve Sasso Fratino, one of the most picturesque and least-visited sections of the Casentinesi Forests National Park. It is the ideal place to begin understanding the environment in which the wolf lives: deep forests, few people, and wide-open spaces. During the day, we’ll introduce the theme of the weekend, learning to observe the landscape with a fresh perspective. We’ll reach Poggio Scali, known as the “balcony of the forests” for its sweeping view between Tuscany and Romagna, and continue on to the hermitage and the Camaldoli Monastery, nestled in the historic fir forest. Overnight stay at an inn.

Route info: 12 km, elevation gain +350 m / elevation loss -800 m

Second day

The Forest Trail and Casa Santicchio
After breakfast, we visit the historic pharmacy in Camaldoli and set off along trails deep in the forest. This is the best day to connect with nature: we’ll walk through centuries-old beech forests and ideal habitats for wildlife, pausing to observe tracks, signs of presence, and the dynamics of the forest. The wolf remains unseen, but the landscape tells us a lot about its presence. Stop at Badia Prataglia for lunch, then continue to Casa Santicchio, an Apennine refuge overlooking the Valle Santa. Dinner and overnight stay.

Route info: 17 km, elevation gain +1000 m / elevation loss -1000 m

Third day

The Ancient Forest and the Sanctuary of La Verna
We descend toward the valley floor and pass through the small village of Rimbocchi. From here, we begin the climb toward the Sanctuary of La Verna, passing through the picturesque ancient forest, also known as the “fairy forest.” A rich and protected environment where the balance between humans and nature is clearly felt. It’s time to reflect on the experience: what we’ve learned about the wolf, its role, and the proper way to interact with these environments. Visit to the sanctuary and return to Stia (around 4:00 p.m.).
