Never been to Ljubljana? Even if you've already seen it, you definitely can't miss our group trip to the 2016 European Green Capital, which awaits you with a week's vacation by bike and on foot to discover this dynamic city with a thousand faces: we'll explore it with walks along tree-lined avenues, over the Dragon Bridge and other famous bridges, and through elegant squares that tell us precious stories. From the top of Ljubljana Castle, we will be able to gaze out over the endless countryside, from which the capital stands out like a jewel set in a setting made up of street art and trendy bars. Our daily excursions will also take us to discover some corners of Slovenia's natural and disruptive beauty, with true natural wonders such as Triglav National Park and Lake Bohinj, then moving further south to cycle together in the Slovenian barje. For those who wish, it will be possible to stay an extra night and also visit Lake Bled or the charming and rustic Velika Planina!
WHERE ARE WE GOING?
Program
First day
Welcome to our hotel in the center of Ljubljana, the most urban and green in the whole city! We will meet in the late afternoon with our local guide to discuss the program. What could be better than an excellent traditional Slovenian dinner to start our vacation? From tomorrow , many different activities and destinations await us: from a walking tour of Ljubljana to a bike ride on the cycle path that surrounds the city;from an excursion to Lake Bohinj to a day of cycling to discover the Slovenian barje, a refreshing environment during the summer days.
Second day
Urban trekking in Ljubljana
Today we will walk the streets of beautiful Ljubljana, following in the footsteps of architect Plecnik. This prophet of postmodernism scattered the city with symbolic and functional creations such as the Tromostovje bridge. We will pass the Dragon Bridge and the Cobblers' Bridge, and stroll together along Trubarjeva Street, the most characteristic street in this area. We climb up to the castle for a view from above and, on our way back down, we immerse ourselves in Plecnik's Central Market, where we can have lunch.
We continue our urban trek to Tivoli Park, the green lung of Ljubljana that stretches from the city center to the slopes of Rožnik Hill.
Third day
Ljubljana by bike
We take our bikes and follow the Ljubljanica, the city's river, tothe Ljubljana Botanical Garden with its 4,500 species and one of the oldest lime trees in Slovenia. We take the"POT," a circular route of remembrance and friendship that embraces the city, where in 1942 the 35 km fascist iron fence stood. We arrive at the large Tivoli Park for a break, then return to the city via Metelkova Mesto, an example of urban transformation. In the wake of architectural and artistic research, we visit Plecnik's house, thus closing the circle that began yesterday. Dinner on your own.
Fourth day
Discover the Slovenian Barje by bike
Midweek: today we leave the city behind and immerse ourselves in the Slovenian Barje by bike. This unique, verdant black earth marshland seems to be "tamed but not too much," giving the impression of being far from the urban center. Onthis excursion near Ljubljana, we will discover this delicate area, now a nature park, immersing ourselves in rural Slovenia just 10 km from the city. We will cycle through small villages until we reach Lake Jezero. We will dip our feet in its waters to cool off before sitting down at a good table in a Gostlina to refresh ourselves!
Fifth day
Excursion to Lake Bohinj
Today we will take a day trip outside Ljubljana: after an energetic breakfast, we will head to Triglav National Park. On the way, we will see the beautiful landscapes that characterize green Slovenia. We will be amazed by the variety of green and emerald colors: Lake Bohinj and its surrounding nature offer a unique spectacle! Triglav National Park is Slovenia's only national park, named after the country's highest mountain at 2,864 m. In this beautiful setting, we will also have the opportunity to take a lovely boat trip!
Sixth day
Time to head back... or time for another excursion to the best sights in Slovenia?! You can request an extra night at the same hotel: just a short distance away, you can easily explore the magnificent Lake Bled or the Vintgar Gorge, carved by water between the vertical cliffs of Mount Hom and Mount Boršt. Or head to the Postojna Caves, featuring 21 km of tunnels in the habitat of the olm, a cave-dwelling creature known as the “little dragon.” From here, we recommend a visit to Predjama Castle, perched on a karst rock formation. If you love the mountains, we highly recommend Velika Planina, the shepherds’ plateau, dotted with one-of-a-kind wooden cottages, where you’ll be welcomed with local specialties.
