WHERE ARE WE GOING?
Program
First day
Welcome to our hotel in the center of Ljubljana, the most urban and green in the whole city! We meet in the late afternoon with our local guide to explain the program. What could be better than an excellent traditional Slovenian dinner to start our vacation? From tomorrow, many different activities and destinations await us: from walking tour of Ljubljana, to a bike ride on the cycle path that surrounds the city; fromexcursion to Lake Bohinj to a day of cycling to discover the Slovenian barje, a refreshing environment during the summer days.
Second day
Urban trekking in Ljubljana
Today we walk the streets of beautiful Ljubljana on foot, following in the footsteps of architect Plecnik. This prophet of postmodernism has scattered the city with symbolic and functional creations such as the Tromostovje. We pass the Dragon Bridge and the Shoemakers' Bridge, and stroll together along Trubarjeva Street Trubarjeva, the most characteristic street in this area. We climb up to the castle for a view from above and, on our way back down, we immerse ourselves in the Central Market , where we can have lunch.
We continue our urban trekking at Tivoli Park, the green lung of Ljubljana that stretches from the city center to the slopes of Rožnik.
Third day
Ljubljana by bike
We take our bikes and follow the Ljubljanica, the city's river, to theLjubljana Botanical Garden with its 4,500 species and one of the oldest lime trees in Slovenia. We take the "POT", a circular route of remembrance and friendship that embraces the city, where in 1942 the 35 km fascist iron fence stood. We arrive at the large Tivoli Park for a break, then return to the city via Metelkova Mesto, an example of urban transformation. In the wake of architectural and artistic research, we go to visit Plecnik's house, thus closing the circle that began yesterday. Dinner on your own.
Fourth day
Discover the Slovenian Barje by bike
Midweek: today we leave the city behind and immerse ourselves into the Slovenian Barje. This unique, verdant black earth marshland seems to be "tamed but not too much," giving the impression of being far from the urban center. With thisexcursion near Ljubljana , we will discover this delicate area, now a nature park, immersing ourselves in rural Slovenia just 10 km from the city. We will cycle through small villages until we reach Lake Jezero. We dip our feet in its waters to cool off before sitting down at a good table in a Gostlina to refresh ourselves!
Fifth day
Excursion to Lake Bohinj
Today Day trip outside Ljubljana: after an energetic breakfast, we head to Triglav National Park. On the way, we will see the beautiful landscapes that characterize green Slovenia. We will be amazed by the variety of green and emerald colors: Lake Bohinj and its surrounding nature offer a unique spectacle! Triglav National Park is the only national park in Slovenia, named after Slovenia's highest mountain at 2,864 m. In this beautiful setting, we will also have the opportunity to take a nice boat ride!
Sixth day
Time to return... or time for another excursion to the best places to see in Slovenia?! You can request an extra night and decide to head north to the romantic Lake Bled and the Vintgar Gorge, carved out by water between the vertical walls of the Hom and Boršt mountains. Or head south to the Postojna Caves, 21 km of tunnels in the habitat of the proteus, a cave-dwelling animal known as the "little dragon." From here, you can go to Predjama Castle, nestled in the karst rock. Another highly recommended excursion is to Velika Planina, the shepherds' plateau dotted with unique wooden houses, where you will be welcomed with typical local specialties.
It takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes to drive from the Italian border to Ljubljana, so it's very convenient. The hotel has a few parking spaces, which you can request upon arrival. Please note: You must purchase a vignette to access Slovenian highways. You can buy a physical vignette at service stations near the borders (Austria, Croatia, Italy, and Hungary), at the ACI in Italy, or at bars and tobacconists on the border with Slovenia. Alternatively, an electronic vignette is also available and can be purchased on the website https://evinjeta.dars.si/selfcare/it.
Ljubljana is easily accessible from Trieste by bus; Flixbus usually offers several trips throughout the day.
