An easy week in the mountains to discover the beauty of Val di Non, such as Lake Smeraldo, the Sanctuary of San Romedio, and the Rio Sass Canyon.

Get ready for a total immersion in the nature and culture of the Val di Non, with an easy group vacation in Trentino. Starting right from the hotel on foot, or with short drives, you’ll reach the Val di Non’s most famous sites, such as Lago Smeraldo with its crystal-clear waters, the spectacular gorges of the Rio Sass Canyon, and the Sanctuary of San Romedio, considered one of the most evocative hermitages in the world. Through easy guided hikes, you’ll have the chance to explore historical and natural topics, such as life in the mountain pastures or spotting animal tracks in the forest. The trails we’ll suggest are perfect for first-time mountain vacationers or anyone looking to unwind while strolling through the Val di Non’s forests, covered in fir and larch trees. At the end of the day, when you’re feeling a bit tired, you can unwind in the hotel’s spa or treat your palate to a tasting of delicacies produced by local artisans.

WHERE ARE WE GOING?

Program

First day

We have the whole day to make our way at a leisurely pace to our 3-star hotel in Fondo. We’ll meet up with our tour guide and the rest of the group around 6 p.m. to get to know each other and go out for dinner. Our guide, who lives in the area, will tell us about the guided hikes we’ll be takingin the Upper Val di Non, such as those to Lago Smeraldo with its crystal-clear waters, the Sanctuary of San Romedio, and the spectacular gorges of the Rio Sass Canyon.

Second day

From the Village to the Lake: First Step into Nature
The first hike of our guided mountain vacation is the perfect embodiment of a sustainable tourism experience, as we set out on foot directly fromthe hotel. We’ll explore the village of Fondo through a picturesque canyon that leads us to Lago Smeraldo, an oasis of peace bordered by forests of fir and larch trees. Around lunchtime, we’ll reach the Rifugio alle Regole, where we can choose between a packed lunch or a taste of traditional Trentino cuisine. We’ll head back through a pleasant forest of larch and fir trees. Before dinner, we can relax at the hotel’s spa.

Route info: 10 km and 350 m elevation gain

Third day

Open Views
Our second group hike takes us on a scenic walk through the meadows of the upper Val di Non, accompanied by views of the Brenta and Maddalene mountain ranges. In the afternoon, we’ll explore the Rio Sass Canyon, accessible via a picturesque network of walkways and ladders that wind through the rocks. If we’d like, we can wrap up the excursion with a tasting at a traditional Trentino brewery: no sustainable vacation is complete without learning about local products and sampling them! We’ll return to our 3-star hotel with a pool for some relaxation or a massage at the wellness center.

Route info: 12 km and 300 m elevation gain

Fourth day

Between Cultural Boundaries and Nature
We head to Tret, a fascinating place that marks a hidden boundary between Ladin and Germanic cultures. Here, nature offers unique spectacles, such as the Pis Waterfall, with its plunge of over 70 meters into the void, framed by rocky cliffs and sparkling spray. We continue our walk through larch forests and small flower-filled clearings to Lake Tret, an enchanted spot where time seems to stand still. We can relax by the lake or enjoy a traditional lunch at a mountain hut, savoring the best South Tyrolean specialties. On the way back, we’ll stop to visit a local beekeeper who will let us sample his products.

Route info: 10 km and 500 m elevation gain

Fifth day

Toward Malga Romeno
We’ll set out along the trails of the Mendola Pass, a historic vacation destination for Emperor Franz Joseph and Princess Sissi. Together with the whole group, we’ll ascend gently through breathtaking scenery and cool forests to Malga Romeno, at the foot of the majestic Monte Roen, at an elevation of 1,769 meters. During this guided hike, we’ll pass through flower-filled clearings and traditional alpine huts, where the silence of the mountains blends with the fresh, pure air. Once we arrive at the mountain hut, we’ll enjoy a relaxing break, accompanied by delicious Trentino dishes prepared with local ingredients.

Route info: 12 km and 400 m elevation gain

Sixth day

A Sanctuary Carved into the Rock
The Sanctuary of San Romedio is definitely one of the top 10 things to see in Val di Non . We’ll reach the sanctuary—perched atop a 70-meter-high rocky obelisk in the middle of a wild valley—via a path carved entirely out of the rock. We’ll return to Sanzeno along a scenic trail and visit the museum dedicated to the mysterious Raetian people. One last spa session before dinner together.

Route info: 10 km and 300 m elevation gain

Seventh day

We’ve reached the end of our easy outdoor weekend in Trentino. Breakfast is the perfect time to say goodbye to all our new friends and save the contact information of those we’ve bonded with the most. We explored the most famous spots in the Val di Non on foot andexperienced responsible tourism in Italy. Before heading home, we recommend stopping by the dairy in Fondo to pick up some traditional Val di Non cheeses to give to friends or enjoy yourself as you reminisce about this wonderful week of vacation!

Itinerary information
The vacation is simple and also suitable for first-time visitors, provided they are in good health.
Notes
Local transportation: Short trips will be made using participants' cars. If this is not possible, a van will need to be rented and the cost shared among users.
Important
As with any active trip, the itinerary is subject to change—including the order of activities or stops—depending on weather conditions, road conditions, any temporary closures or restrictions at sites, locations, or areas to be visited, as well as the guide’s judgment, who will always act in the best interests of the group and the safety of the participants. The activity will take place even in case of bad weather, except in situations involving weather alerts or conditions that could compromise safety; we therefore recommend bringing appropriate gear for possible precipitation and temperature changes.
Train

We recommend arriving by car because (short) trips will be made using participants' cars and organized carpooling. If you choose to use public transportation, no problem: the bus stop is right in front of the hotel, and for other trips you can ask for a ride from someone with a car (sharing the cost).

Train

Every hour, a modern train departs from Trento and crosses the entire valley before continuing on towards Val di Sole. From the stations in Dermulo and Cles, there are bus connections to the many towns in the valley. You can find all the information you need at https://www.visitvaldinon.it/it/come-arrivare/.
