Zante by Bike: Nature and Crystal-Clear Seas – Self-Guided

A bike tour to discover the most authentic side of Zakynthos, far from the crowds, exploring hidden coves and timeless villages, beyond Navagio Beach.

The island of Zakynthos, also known as “Fior di Levante,” is famous for its beautiful and diverse beaches and for being immortalized in a sonnet by Ugo Foscolo. But there is a Zakynthos far removed from the crowded tourist trails: an island of silence, the scent of resin, and glimpses of endless blue. This is the Zakynthos you discover only by slowing down, cycling along secondary roads and trails that wind through sun-kissed vineyards and ancient olive groves.
This Ionian Greek island is more than just the famous Navagio Beach. By bike, you can reach hidden coves, small harbors, and inland villages where time seems to have stood still. Every pedal stroke becomes an invitation to connect withthe most authentic soul of Greece, amidst unspoiled nature and local hospitality. This self-guided cycling tour is designed for active travelers who wish to explore independently, at their own pace, yet with the peace of mind that comes from having a professional organization behind them. You cycle, stop whenever you want, and truly experience the island. We’ll take care of the rest.

Over the next few days, you’ll discover that a cycling trip in Zakynthos means riding through vineyards, small harbors, and traditional villages, following cycling routes perfect for those seeking nature, crystal-clear seas, and the freedom to explore. The self-guided format will let you experience the island at your own pace, with suggested routes, local assistance, and organization. You’ll receive a bike or e-bike suited to your height, GPX tracks, detailed maps, and personalized recommendations on cycling routes, beaches, and traditional taverns. Since this is an independent tour, you can tailor the stages to your skill level, with constant support from the on-site staff. Here is your vacation in Greece, tailored for those who, like you, seek adventure and authenticity.

Second day

Kalamaki and the Z
Marine Park The call of the sea is strong, so today we’re suggesting a flat route that’s perfect for warming up your legs, heading south on flat, quiet roads. Passing through the town of Zakynthos, you’ll cycle to Kalamaki Beach: the beach overlooks the Zakynthos National Marine Park, a protected area famous for its loggerhead sea turtles. Shallow waters, golden sand, and turquoise water: the perfect combination of cycling and beach relaxation.

Route info: 28 km | 130 m elevation gain

Third day

Keri, Cameo, and Marathònissi
Today, we’re cycling south again along a scenic route to the village of Keri, winding through olive groves and offering glimpses of the crystal-clear sea. Along the way, it’s worth stopping to visit the picturesque Cameo Island, connected by a wooden pier—the perfect spot for a photo break or a dip in its crystal-clear waters. From Limni Keri, you can rent a boat to visit Marathònissi, the “Turtle Island”: sea caves, secluded bays, and emerald waters make this a must-see destination.

Route info: 37 km | 300 m elevation gain

Fourth day

Gerakas and the Southeast Coast
Today we’re heading southeast for a more challenging yet spectacular route, featuring gentle climbs and scenic hairpin turns nestled in the Mediterranean scrub. Our final destination is Gerakas Beach, one of the island’s wildest and most picturesque beaches. Along the way, you’ll find sandy coves, beach bars, and traditional taverns: the perfect blend of sports, crystal-clear waters, and Greek ambiance.

Route info: 47 km | 410 m elevation gain

Fifth day

Zakynthos Town
A tour dedicated to exploring Zakynthos Town, the cultural and historical heart of the island, is also a must. As you cycle through its lively streets, you can admire monuments, churches, and squares that tell the story and capture the spirit of the island, perhaps taking the opportunity to buy souvenirs
and local products in the small shops downtown. A must-see stop is the birthplace of Ugo Foscolo, which bears witness to the deep bond between the poet and this beautiful Greek island. You can take a detour north to Amoudi, a charming seaside village. Here you’ll find a taverna with tables overlooking the water, ideal for a relaxing break
. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a traditional Greek lunch accompanied by the view of the crystal-clear sea and the sound of the waves.

Route info: 27 km | 180 m elevation gain

Sixth day

Porto Limnionas
Today’s bike tour in Zakynthos takes us to Porto Limnionas, a picturesque rocky cove on the island’s west coast famous for its fjords. Now that we’ve warmed up our legs, we can tackle some more challenging routes. Along the way, we pass through a more authentic and quiet part of Zakynthos, with increasingly open views of the sea and a landscape that grows progressively wilder. Then, almost suddenly, the arrival at Porto Limnionas makes the climb worthwhile with crystal-clear waters, white rocks, a refreshing swim, and the chance to stop at the seaside tavern to enjoy the local cuisine. A short but very scenic route, ideal for discovering a less-touristy side of Zakynthos.

Route info: 20 km | 510 m elevation gain, 520 m elevation loss on asphalt and concrete

Seventh day

Finally, Navagio!
Today’s itinerary takes us to one of the most famous viewpoints on the island of Zakynthos: the overlook at Shipwreck Beach, also known as Navagio Beach. The bay, located on Zakynthos’s west coast, is one of the island’s most iconic landmarks and captivates visitors with the striking contrast between the white cliffs, the Ionian Sea’s vibrant hues, and the famous shipwreck resting on the sand. The route requires quite a bit of energy, especially due to some uphill sections. Along the way, we pass through a rougher, more scenic part of Zakynthos, amid Mediterranean scrub, rocky terrain, and views that suddenly open up onto the Ionian Sea. Navajo Beach is accessible only by boat, but the viewpoint offers a wide, spectacular view of the entire cove. The viewpoint is easily accessible from the road, with a short walk from the access area.
We are facing one of Zakynthos’s most famous sites. We’ll have plenty of time to stop, look around, and truly appreciate the power of the landscape and the beauty of nature.

Route info: 23 km | 590 m elevation gain | 530 m elevation loss

Eighth day

After breakfast, it’s time to head back, but we take with us the best of these vacation days in Zakynthos, captured in perfect rhythm: the scenic roads we cycled along, the deep blue of the Ionian Sea, the spectacular view of Shipwreck Beach, the stops by the sea, and the island’s most authentic corners, discovered pedal stroke by pedal stroke. Between climbs that really put us to the test and more relaxed stretches, we got to know a Zakynthos made up of rocky coastlines, crystal-clear bays, small shared moments, and views that will stay with us forever. We set off again with Porto Limnionas in our eyes, the silhouette of the west coast, and that wonderful feeling of having seenthis Greek island from a different perspective—one that’s slower and more authentic.
