Lyon by bike: between the Rhône, the Saône, and urban bike paths

Five days in Lyon, combining culture with leisurely bike rides along the bike paths in one of France’s most beautiful cities

A cycling trip to Lyon, one of Europe’s most surprising cities for cycling enthusiasts. Following the bike paths along the Rhône and Saône rivers, we discover a city that is both dynamic and laid-back, where nature and architecture coexist in harmony. We alternate days of cycling on completely flat and safe routes with moments of exploration on foot, through the narrow streets of Vieux Lyon, the squares of the Presqu’île, and the panoramic views from Fourvière Hill. We cycle along iconic routes like the ViaRhôna and reach natural spaces such as the Grand Parc de Miribel-Jonage, surrounded by water and greenery. It’s a vacation in France designed for those who want to get around in a light and accessible way, with time to stop, observe, and experience the city at the right pace. An ideal trip for those seeking an easy bike ride, a lively city, and the pleasure of discovery through cycling.

WHERE ARE WE GOING?

Program

First day

We arrive in Lyon and, after checking into the hotel, take our first stroll to soak up the atmosphere of this French city. We stroll through the historic district of Vieux Lyon, winding through medieval alleyways, traboules, and past Saint-Jean Cathedral; we take the funicular up to Fourvière Hill to admire the city from above; and we walk along the Presqu’île between Place Bellecour and Place des Terreaux. The day is intentionally laid-back, perfect for settling in.

Second day

First day on the bike—the perfect way to start off at a leisurely pace. We’ll cycle along the Rhône’s bike paths, starting from the Berges du Rhône, and gradually make our way out of the city to the Grand Parc de Miribel-Jonage, a vast green space. Here , we’ll ride around Lake des Eaux Bleues, surrounded by water, nature, and open spaces, before heading back to Lyon along the Jonage Canal. Free evening.

Route info: 30 km, 100% bike path / completely flat greenway

Third day

We follow the course of the Saône along a peaceful greenway, starting from the Saint-Paul neighborhood. We crossÎle Barbe and continue along the river to Rochetaillée-sur-Saône, surrounded by a shaded and relaxing setting. The route is straight and traffic-free, ideal for cycling at a steady pace and enjoying the riverside scenery. We return to the city at the same leisurely pace. Dinner at a typical Lyonnais bouchon. Get ready for a unique culinary experience, designed for those who love exploring new flavors! The menu features traditional Lyonnais dishes, with some specialties that will surprise even the most adventurous palates. An unmissable opportunity to discover the true essence of Lyon!

Fourth day

Our latest bike ride along the Rhône, this time heading south. We set off from the Confluence neighborhood and follow the ViaRhôna, one of France’s most important bike routes. We ride along a wide, smooth bike path, with open, sunny stretches, all the way to the Oullins/Pierre-Bénite area, before heading back to Lyon.

Route info: 30 km, 100% bike path

Fifth day

Let’s spend the morning exploring some parts of the city we haven’t seen yet. We can explore the Croix-Rousse neighborhood, with the Mur des Canuts and the artisan workshops, or visit the Musée des Confluences. We’ll take one last stroll along the banks of the Rhône, then head back to Italy, depending on our flight schedules. Au revoir!

As with any active trip, the itinerary is subject to change—including the order of activities or stops—depending on weather conditions, road conditions, any temporary closures or restrictions at sites, locations, or areas to be visited, as well as the guide’s judgment, who will always act in the best interests of the group and the safety of the participants.
