A week of trekking in the Faroe Islands, in the heart of a remote archipelago suspended in the North Atlantic between Iceland, Norway, and Scotland. We will walk among islands sculpted by time, where mountains descend into deep fjords and cliffs stretch out endlessly, as if the world ended at the sea. We will follow various walking routes in the Faroe Islands, accompanied by our guide through the silence of these isolated and spectacular lands: bright grass covers the hills like a carpet and sheep graze peacefully among seasonal flowers. Seabirds fly overhead, while waterfalls slide towards the ocean with a continuous, hypnotic sound. And then there are the villages, consisting of a few colorful, compact, and sturdy houses, which tell of a simple life linked to the sea and the land. Day by day, we will move between the islands of the archipelago, startingfrom the island of Kalsoy with its famous Kallur Lighthouse, then visiting beautiful Vágar with its infamous Bøsdalafossur waterfall. We will stay in Tórshavn and Suðuroy, between the capital and one of the wildest islands in the Faroe Islands: here we will have the opportunity to capture the true essence of this sometimes otherworldly area. This trip requires a bit of adaptability and a willingness to collaborate, but it rewards you with something rare: the feeling of being truly far away from the noise, surrounded by powerful and beautiful nature, in the heart of the Faroe Islands.
WHERE ARE WE GOING?
Program
First Day
This organized trek to the Faroe Islands starts at the airport, where we will meet the rest of the group and our guide for the week. From Vágar Island, where the airport is located, we will travel by local transport to Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands, where we will arrive in the evening. Here we will settle into our accommodation for the next few nights. In the evening, we will meet in one of the houses to get to know each other better, cook together, and spend time in each other's company. Over the next few days, we will go on some of the most beautiful excursions in the Faroe Islands, visit the beautiful Trælanípa cliffs and the village of Kirkjubøur, and venture on a trek to the Kallur lighthouse.
Second Day
Kalsøy Island and Kallur Lighthouse
Discover the north of the Faroe Islands, with its magnificent views and one of the most iconic treks in the archipelago! During the transfer, we see the landscape change: between fjords, mountains, and rugged coastlines, we reach the district of Klaksvík, the second most important city in the Faroe Islands. We board the ferry tothe island of Kalsoy, one of the wildest and most magnetic islands. We begin our trek to the Kallur lighthouse: the trail leads to an incredible promontory. If the weather is favorable, we can walk from Trøllanes to Mikladalur: an itinerary that allows us to get in touch with the most authentic soul of Kalsoy. Mikladalur is linked to the famous legend of the "Seal Woman, " one of the best-known stories in Faroese tradition.
We then return to Tórshavn by bus, once again passing through some of the most breathtaking landscapes of the Faroe Islands, before a well-deserved evening's rest.
Third Day
Trekking in Vágar: Sørvágsvatn, Trælanípa, Gásadalur, and Múlafossur Waterfall
Today we explorethe island of Vágar, starting from the village of Miðvágur and walking along the shores of Sørvágsvatn, the largest lake in the Faroe Islands. We will then continue uphill to the Trælanípa cliff, a famous viewpoint. After the hike, we will move on to Gásadalur, a tiny village known for being home to one of the symbolic images of the Faroe Islands: the Múlafossur waterfall. In this area, with a little luck and at the right time of year, we will also be able to observe puffins, the colorful seabirds that have become the emblem of the archipelago, up close. The order of activities may vary depending on the needs and schedules of the Faroese public transport network.
Fourth Day
Tórshavn and Suðuroy: nature, identity, and the North Atlantic
The morning is dedicated to Tórshavn with a visit to the Faroe Islands Natural History Museum, a stop to better understand this territory. After lunch, we will board the ferry to Suðuroy, the southernmost island and one of the most authentic in the Faroe Islands. The crossing itself is exciting: we will be sailing in the North Atlantic. Upon arrival, Suðuroy will welcome us with a different atmosphere: wilder, less frequented and therefore still deeply unspoiled. Among wind-sculpted mountains, small villages and cliffs overlooking the ocean, we will begin to discover one of the most surprising and least known areas of the Faroe Islands.
Fifth Day
From Tvøroyri to Hvannagi: geological walk
From the town of Tvøroyri, we will set off on a pleasant walk that will take us to Hvannagi, an area considered to be one of the most interesting from a geological point of view. Here, the basalt strata tell the ancient history of the Faroe Islands: dark rocks, shapes sculpted by the wind and the ocean, which for centuries has been patiently and powerfully shaping the coastline. The route is ideal for experiencing the most authentic side of Suðuroy without tackling challenging elevation gains. The day endson the island of Suðuroy, far from the beaten track: a place that captivates with its tranquility, cozy villages, and unspoiled nature.
Sixth Day
Columnar basalt and villages of Suðuroy
In the morning, we will explore Suðuroy for the last time: we will discover the columnar basalt, spectacular rock formations that bear witness to the volcanic origin of the Faroe Islands and create almost unreal scenery along the coast. We will then continue our trekking holiday by visiting one of the most picturesque villages in the Faroe Islands, strolling among colorful houses and open views of the ocean: a simple and authentic way to get in touch with local daily life, away from the more touristy routes.
We will then board the ferry to Tórshavn, where we will spend the next few nights.
Seventh Day
Streymoy Island: trekking from Tórshavn to Kirkjubøur
Today we will visit Streymoy Island on an excursion that combines coastal landscapes and ancient history. We will depart from Tórshavn for a scenic trek to Kirkjubøur, one of the most picturesque and important villages in the archipelago. Walking along open paths and green pastures, we will often have the ocean in the background and the Faroese mountains around us: a walking itinerary in the Faroe Islands that is perfect for savoring the essence of the North Atlantic. We return to Tórshavn to explore the capital: we will stroll through the historic center among narrow streets, colorful houses, and views that seem to come from another era. We will have dinner together and enjoy our last evening in the Faroe Islands.
Eighth Day
We have reached the last day of this special group vacation in the Faroe Islands: the unique landscapes of the North and the ancient culture of these places have certainly left their mark, as only such an isolated and surprising place can do! Thanks to our expert guide and our new friends, we have had experiences that go beyond a simple vacation: this has been a real journey of discovery, of curiosity to learn about new places and new people, of respect for the silence and infinite nature of Northern Europe. See you on the next adventure!
Round-trip flight, 2 excursion fees, the Sørvágsvatn Lake excursion, and the Kallur Lighthouse excursion (€30 each, to be paid on-site by credit card), meals, and anything not listed under “Included.”
These on-site expenses will be managed through a shared fund of approximately €240 (the amount is approximate and depends on the choices made during the trip):
- €100 for public transportation (purchase of a weekly pass)
- €20 for a bus or taxi transfer to the airport on the last day
- €120 for meals, to be self-catered (given the high cost of restaurants, you may still choose to have one or more dinners at local eateries while there)
3-star hotels, B&Bs, or cottages in true Faroese style. Single rooms are not available: the watchword for this vacation is sharing, so you will be staying in double, triple, or quadruple rooms or apartments, where mixed pairings will also be possible!
To reach the Faroe Islands from Italy, you will need to make at least one stopover (probably in Copenhagen). Upon arrival at the airport, our guide will be waiting for you and will accompany you to your first hotel.
