Trekking in the Faroe Islands: walking among fjords, green meadows, and colorful villages

A group vacation to the Faroe Islands is something you should do at least once in your life: let yourself be amazed by the simple beauty of these Nordic landscapes.

A week of trekking in the Faroe Islands, in the heart of a remote archipelago suspended in the North Atlantic between Iceland, Norway, and Scotland. We will walk among islands sculpted by time, where mountains descend into deep fjords and cliffs stretch out endlessly, as if the world ended at the sea. We will follow various walking routes in the Faroe Islands, letting our guide accompany us through the silence of these isolated and spectacular lands: bright grass covers the hills like a carpet and sheep graze peacefully among seasonal flowers. Seabirds fly overhead, while waterfalls slide towards the ocean with a continuous, hypnotic sound. And then there are the villages, consisting of a few colorful, compact, and sturdy houses, which tell of a simple life linked to the sea and the land. Day by day, we will move between the islands of the archipelago, starting from theIsland of Kalsoy with its famous Kallur Lighthouse, then visit the beautiful Vágar, with its infamous Bøsdalafossur waterfall. We will stay overnight in Tórshavn and Suðuroy, between the capital and one of the wildest islands in the Faroe Islands: here we will have the opportunity to capture the true essence of this sometimes otherworldly area. This trip requires a bit of adaptability and a willingness to collaborate, but it rewards you with something rare: the feeling of being truly far away from the noise, surrounded by powerful and beautiful nature, in the heart of the Faroe Islands.

WHERE ARE WE GOING?

Program

First Day

Welcome to the Faroe Islands!
This
organized trek to the Faroe Islands starts at the airport, where we will meet the rest of the group and our guide for the week. FromIsland of Vágar, where the airport is located, we will travel by local transport to Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands, where we will arrive in the evening. Here we will settle into our accommodation for the next few nights. In the evening, we will meet in one of the houses to get to know each other better, cook together, and spend time in company. Over the next few days, we will go on some of the most beautiful excursions in the Faroe Islands, visit the beautiful Trælanípa cliff and the village of Kirkjubøur, and we will venture on a trek to the Kallur lighthouse,

Second Day

Kalsøy Island and Kallur Lighthouse
Discovering the
north of the Faroe Islands, with its magnificent views and one of the most iconic treks in the archipelago! During the transfer, we see the landscape change: between fjords, mountains, and rugged coastlines, we reach the district of Klaksvík, the second most important city in the Faroe Islands. We board the ferry to theisland of Kalsoy, one of the wildest and most magnetic islands. We will start our trekking to the Kallur lighthouse: the trail leads to an incredible promontory. If the weather is favorable, we can walk from Trøllanes to Mikladalur: an itinerary that allows you to get in touch with the most authentic soul of Kalsoy. Mikladalur is linked to the famous legend of the "Seal Woman", one of the best-known tales in Faroese tradition.
We then return to Tórshavn by bus, once again passing through some of the most breathtaking landscapes of the Faroe Islands, before a well-deserved evening's rest.

Route info: between 2 and 5 hours, elevation gain between 100 m and 400 m (depending on weather conditions)

Third Day

Trekking in Vágar: Sørvágsvatn, Trælanípa, Gásadalur, and Múlafossur Waterfall
Today we explore theisland of Vágar, starting from the village of Miðvágur and walking along the shores of Sørvágsvatn, the largest lake in the Faroe Islands. We will then continue uphill to the Trælanípa cliff, the famous viewpoint. After the hike, we will move on to Gásadalur, a tiny village known for being home to one of the symbolic images of the Faroe Islands: the Múlafossur waterfall. In this area, with a little luck and in the right seasons, we can also observe puffins up close, the colorful seabirds that have become the emblem of the archipelago. The order of activities may vary depending on the needs and schedules of the Faroese public transport network.

Route info: 3 hours, elevation gain 100 m

Fourth Day

Tórshavn and Suðuroy: nature, identity, and the North Atlantic
The morning is dedicated to Tórshavn with a visit to the
Natural History Museum of the Faroe Islands, a stop to better understand this territory. After lunch, we will board the ferry to Suðuroy, the southernmost and one of the most authentic islands of the Faroe Islands. The crossing itself is exciting: we will be sailing in the North Atlantic. Upon arrival, Suðuroy will welcome us with a different atmosphere: wilder, less frequented and therefore still deeply unspoiled. Among wind-sculpted mountains, small villages and cliffs overlooking the ocean, we will begin to discover one of the most surprising and least known areas of the Faroe Islands.

Fifth Day

From Tvøroyri to Hvannagi: geological walk
From the town of
Tvøroyri , we will set off on a pleasant walk that will take us to Hvannagi, an area considered to be one of the most interesting from a geological point of view. Here, the basalt strata tell the ancient history of the Faroe Islands: dark rocks, shapes carved by the wind and the ocean, which for centuries has been shaping the coastline with patience and force. The route is ideal for experiencing the most authentic side of Suðuroy without having to tackle any challenging slopes. The day ends on theisland of Suðuroy, far from the beaten track: a place that captivates with its tranquility, cozy villages, and unspoiled nature.

Route info: 5 hours, elevation gain 400 m

Sixth Day

Columnar basalt and villages of Suðuroy
In the morning, we will explore Suðuroy for the last time: we will discover the columnar basalt, spectacular rock formations that bear witness to the volcanic origin of the Faroe Islands and create almost unreal scenery along the coast. We will then continue our
trekking holiday by visiting one of the most picturesque villages in the Faroe Islands, strolling among colorful houses and open views of the ocean: a simple and authentic way to get in touch with local daily life, away from the more touristy routes.
We will then board the ferry to Tórshavn, where we will spend the next few nights.

Seventh Day

Streymoy Island: hiking from Tórshavn to Kirkjubøur
Today we will visit the island of Streymoy on an excursion that combines coastal landscapes and ancient history. We will depart from Tórshavn for a scenic hike to Kirkjubøur, one of the most picturesque and important villages in the archipelago. Walking along open paths and green pastures, we will often have the ocean in the background and the Faroese mountains around us: a walking itinerary in the Faroe Islands to savor the essence of the North Atlantic. We return to Tórshavn to explore the capital: we will stroll through the historic center among narrow streets, colorful houses, and views that seem to come from another era. We will have dinner together and enjoy our last evening in the Faroe Islands.

Route information: 5 hours, elevation gain 300 m

Eighth Day

We have reached the last day of this special group vacation in the Faroe Islands: the unique landscapes of the North and the ancient culture of these places have certainly left their mark, as only such an isolated and surprising place can do! Thanks to our expert guide and our new friends, we have had experiences that go beyond a simple vacation: this has been a real journey of discovery, of curiosity to learn about new places and new people, of respect for the silence and infinite nature of Northern Europe. See you on the next adventure!

Important
As with any active trip, the itinerary is subject to change—including the order of activities or stops—depending on weather conditions, road conditions, any temporary closures or restrictions at sites, locations, or areas to be visited, as well as the guide’s judgment, who will always act in the best interests of the group and the safety of the participants. The activity will take place even in case of bad weather, except in situations involving weather alerts or conditions that could compromise safety; we therefore recommend bringing appropriate gear for possible precipitation and temperature changes.
